BULLHEAD CITY - Some were too young to know which was their right hand when they pledged to always be ready to
assist veterans. But on Saturday, under the direction of District 8 President Sally Smalley, five girls formed the Colorado
River Valley Junior Girls Unit to the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 10005, becoming the second unit in the state for girls
ages 5 through 16.

The 11-member unit held its first meeting and elected officers at the Elks Lodge, which offered them the space while
Post 10005 rebuilds after a recent arson fire.

VFW State President Judy Hamlin came from Phoenix to institute the unit and gave the girls pins and handbooks. She
said joining the unit would teach the girls valuable lessons.

Third-grader Carly Hendricks, elected as secretary, said she joined the unit for her grandfather, an 86-year old World
War II veteran.

“They help people by fighting for us,” she said about veterans.

Sixth-grader Brittanie Smalley, elected as president, said she's planning several fund raisers and wants to teach the
younger girls how to conduct meetings.

“We're gonna be fund raising some money for Post 10005 for their tragedy and some different chairmanships,” she
said. “We're gonna do car washes and bake sales and possibly dinners. And possibly garage sales.”

So far Smalley estimates the unit has raised almost $600 from a raffle held at Christmas that included a Santa Claus
figurine and two nutcrackers.

“I want to help the veterans because they're very important to me,” she said. “I want to show them that I enjoy my
freedom.”
